Hands of Compassion today

Nearly five hundred orphaned or very destitute children attend our Hands of Compassion Community School in Chipulukusu, a shanty compound near Ndola in Zambia.

Many of these children live in extreme poverty, basic mud brick houses, no running water, no electricity….

They have lost their parents as a result of an AIDS related illness.
If they can not go to school, what hope do they have – they face a life of destitution.

The impact of HIV AIDS on the poor

Our mission is to ensure that disadvantaged orphaned and vulnerable   children can access their right to primary and secondary education.

We provide free basic education from Nursery, Grades One to Seven  and then sponsor them to Government school from Grades eight to twelve,  paying their Government school fees, examination fees and provide a   uniform for them.

Can you sponsor one of our children?

They are also taught vocational skills such as carpentry and tailoring   to   enable them to become self sufficient after leaving school.

Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.  They can   develop their full potential and thus bring hope to their lives

Hands of Compassion Charitable Foundation

Our charity was officially registered in 2008 in UK with a Board of Trustees, whose sole objective is, through consultation and financial support to help support the Community Centre in Zambia and any new Hands of Compassion Centre set up in the future at a different site within Africa.

Our core values which underpin all our activities are Christian focused, in serving the poor and needy people, showing love and compassion in all we do.

How we started

In 2001, about twenty five orphaned or vulnerable children, living in Chipulukusu, a shanty compound near Ndola, Zambia, started to meet each day in a derelict building which had no roof, doors or windows.

Sitting on the dirt ground, they were so eager to learn
, it did not matter that there was no proper classroom, no blackboard or books.   Lessons stopped at 12 noon when the sun was too hot on their heads.  The teacher was not paid a salary, not even given a bar of soap.   She gave her time freely because she wanted to help.

A year later, fundraising started in UK to help renovate the school building, purchase school text books etc and it was later registered with the Ministry of Education in Zambia as a Community school.

Over the years, funds were raised in UK to help develop the Community Centre, such as building of five additional classrooms, pupils toilet block, building store, chicken house and carpentry workshop, surrounded by a boundary wall to enhance security and enable the growing of vegetables and banana trees to generate local income.

The Community Centre was later registered as a charity in Zambia with a local Board of Trustees, working in partnership with the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Nativity Cathedral, Ndola as part of their mission outreach work.
